Building your first worm bin might seem like a huge undertaking but honestly, it can be very simple. Building your worm bin will depend on your worm vermicomposting needs. First ask yourself, “what am I using this worm bin for?” Here are three examples of what will suit your needs

How does that sound?

Worm bedding made easy!

There are many different ways you could create worm bedding for your compost worms. This is one of our favorites. You will need only 4 ingredients:

1. Shredded Cardboard
2. Clean Water
3. Peat Moss
4. Hydrated Lime

Worm bedding can be made by:

• First use clean and dry cardboard. If there is any tape or stickers on it then remove. Worms do not care for this material.
• Next, shred up cardboard by hand, scissors, knife or by using a paper shredder. Use what you have on hand.
• Now, soak the shredded cardboard for 24 hours in clean water.
• After cardboard is soaked, press moisture out by hand to drain off excess water.

Now its time to make the bedding:

• Add shredded cardboard at a volume ratio 2/1: Use 2 parts peat moss to 1 part card board.
• Lastly add 1/4 cup/ 5 gallons by volume of hydrated lime to neutralize the acidic pH of the peat moss mix. Mix the hydrated lime with the peat moss and cardboard mixture thoroughly, until it is evenly blended. This is an amendment so we are using it sparingly.
• Once blended evenly, you are looking for a moist consistency. To help make sure you have the correct consistency, squeeze the material in your hand. We are looking for only a few water droplets to run down. Similar to a kitchen sponge. If there is more than just a few drops, continue to slowly add in small amounts of peat moss to soak up the excess moisture until you get the correct consistency. Practice makes perfect.

What to feed composting worms?

Just like most things in life, you will get out what you put in. Composting worms are no different. They will eat certain types of your household food waste, newspaper, and if you love coffee, you can throw those grounds in the mix. However, that is not the only type of feed you can give your compost worms. We made feeding your composting worms simple. You can purchase our “micronized dry worm chow” on our website. How to harvest compost worm castings?

Here at Living Soil Productions we harvest our compost worm castings, when 95% of the bedding is gone. When harvesting worm castings from our composting worms we use a trammel to screen the material, which really helps with the labor. However, when we first started our operation, we began by making several DIY stainless mesh screens at 1/8 and 1/4th of an inch. Then we used wood framing/trim board at 1/2 inch by 3 inch. These screens work perfectly, however you will put in some major arm workouts by giving the screens a good SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE.
